Additional setup information for the Clearaudio Tonearm Gauge

Never before the exact geometric adjustment of a tonearm with pickup was as easy

as this:

The overhang and the offset angle are adjusted simultaneously at a single point.

This means an enormous ease compared to the up to now iterative procedure
with which the overhang and the offset angle were to be found seperately,

whereby the previous adjustment was most easily lost.

The tonearm gauge can be universally applied for any pivot distance (distance

from turntable center to tonearm pivot). No compromises must be taken if there
is a deviation of the actual pivot distance from a nominal or calculation base

distance, thus enabling play for variations: If i.e. the headshell does not allow for
adjusting the necessary overhang, the pivot distance can be changed accordingly
or to obtain best tracking results you can try to find the maximum pivot distance

which is allowed by the headshell adjustment range.

Because the predominant majority of records pressed for audiophile music

enjoyment is not cut to the minimal inner groove radius of 60.325mm admitted
by IEC standard, the reduction to a smaller modulated range allows for a better
optimization with audible sound improvement by less distortion. Only when

playing the inner rarely modulated grooves one accepts worse performance.

By checking the smallest modulated groove radius of a large number of

audiophile records Clearaudio determined that the majority is not cut under a
radius of 75mm and therefore recommends the optimization of the tonearm

geometrie to be based on this tracking range and alternatively provides this
adjustment possibility by merely changing the orientation of the base plate and
the direction finder bar. This means: within this reduced range the maximal

distortion is almost half; at a radius of 72mm distortion is equal compared to the
optimization for IEC inner groove radius and only below this radius the distortion
increases (see diagram below).
