Important! The spaces between the individual command tokens are only for better understanding and must not
be entered in a PC operation. Control tokens (inferior to 20Hex) are in square brackets.
When receiving an incorrect PC protocol the counter will return an error message, provided NE218 is still ad-
dressable in the network. Please refer also to paragraph „Error messages“ on page 5.

3. Memory location readout

All memory locations providing a line number in the parameterization plan (except for separating lines marked by
dashes) enable readout.
Protocol: <STX> address line <ETX> [<CR>] is applicable to each line.
However, the protocol length in the counter’s response might differ from line to line since it depends on the data
volume of the respective memory location.
NE218 enables readout both in RUN mode and PGM mode. The only difference is in the counter reply as de-
scribed below: “R” is returned being in RUN mode and “P” being in PGM mode.

Response to a Read command (general):

<STX> address line mode [VZ] data <ETX> <CR>

Mode P=NE218 is in programming mode
R=NE218 is in RUN mode
VZ Presign, only ever transferred as minus -
Data max. number of characters, with leading zeroes less decimal point
(Exception: line 23 with decimal point)

3.1 Examples for memory location readout

The following parameters are applied in the example below:
Device address = 35; mode = R (RUN)

Readout main counter XP (line=01, current value=1500)
Request: <STX>3501<ETX>
Response: <STX>3501R001500<ETX><CR>

Readout counting mode (lline=25, parameter =item 3)
Request: <STX>3525<ETX>
Response: <STX>3525R3<ETX><CR>

(3 entspricht Spur A90ºB Einfachauswertung)

Readout scaling factor SF (line=07, parameter=01,0000)
Request: <STX>3507<ETX>
Response: <STX>3507R01.0000<ETX><CR>

Readout device address (line=54, device address=35)
Request: <STX>3554<ETX>
Response: <STX>3554R35<ETX><CR>
