The communication parameters for each channel are individually adjustable for every channel.
These settings are made via a terminal or PC (running a terminal program) connected to
channel 0 on the MX-16. Once selected the settings are saved in a non volatile memory.
To allow settings via channel 0, one dip-switch must be set, see page 14.

The multiplexer MX-16 can in theory be expanded to more than two sub-levels but when

the effective communication throughput per channel decreases with every expansion, its only
relevant to use the MX-16 in an application with maximum two levels (as described above).
The total number of communication channels are 16 in an expanded MX-16 application. The
effective bandwidth also depends on how each channel (port) is configured with respect to
the transmit conditions. A complete two level MX-16 application consist of ten units.

The maximum bandwidth, in full-duplex continuous communication, without any flow con-

trol, (through two units) is approximately 20 kbit/s. In other words, it is possible to commu-
nicate with ~5 kbit/s (in full duplex) per channel through one pair of MX-16, if all four chan-
nels are connected.

In the most common applications, the communication is in half-duplex and not continuous.

When used in a half-duplex/not continuous application, the MX-16 can handle communica-
tion speeds much higher than these described above.

MX-16 Functional Description

The MX-16 is a multiplexer unit which can handle four incoming RS-232/V.24 ports and one
outgoing port (combined channel). The combined channel interface can be RS-232/V.24 or
RS-422. The combined channel is galvanically isolated from the input channels.

The RS-232/V.24 and RS-422 ports of the combined interface are
parallel connected and hence can not be used at the same time.

It is possible to expand the number of channels to 16 units using the
configuration below.
