Main switch

The main switch is used to select the mode of operation
(OFF, STBY, HEAT, HV) as well as the listening source.
The switch can be rotated manually in either direction. If
the remote control handset is used, the motorised switch
moves automatically to the selected position.

The function of the various switch positions is as follows:

OFF

The amplifier is switched off.
In this switch position the unit does not respond to
commands from the remote control handset. The unit
must be switched on manually by rotating the main
switch.

STBY

(Standby mode)

In Standby mode the amplifier is also switched off; power
is only supplied to the remote control receiver. However,
this means that the P10 can now be switched on from the
Standby setting using the remote control handset.

HEAT

Moving the switch to the HEAT setting switches on the
valve heating, but the amplifier itself remains switched
off. The HEAT setting is designed to avoid the valves
cooling off between periods of listening (intervals of
5 minutes .. 2 hours).
In the HEAT setting the high voltage is still switched off;
current consumption is reduced, and the valves are not
under load. The operating hours counter (see section
'Programs, Time') does not run in this mode.

HV

Moving the switch to the HV setting switches on valve
heating and high voltage.
This setting is recommended for brief breaks between
listening sessions (< 5 minutes).

Operating positions

DISC / TUNER / AUX / AUX/PH / AUX1 / AUX2 /
RECORDER

Moving the main switch to any of these positions
switches on the P10 completely, rendering it ready to
use; you can now listen to the selected source. At the
same time the signal supplied by the selected source is
also present at the recorder outputs, and can be
recorded on a machine capable of this function.

Switching on the P10

The P10 can be turned on by moving the main switch
from any setting (i. e. including the OFF or STBY
position) directly to one of the operating positions.

The micro-processor control system ensures that the
valves are always heated gently to the optimum level,
and that the high voltage is not switched off prematurely.
The smooth, processor-controlled warming-up process of
the P10 avoids damage to the valves and extends their
useful life. If the P10 is switched on from cold, it takes
about one minute for the valves to heat up fully.

During the initial heating phase the delay display on the
screen flashes. When the correct operating temperature
is reached and the high voltage is switched on, the high
voltage symbol appears on the screen. The amplifier is
now ready for use, the loudspeaker outputs are active,
and you can start listening.

The main switch:

The main switch is not a mains isolation switch; even in
the OFF position electrical current is supplied to a few
parts of the circuit. However, the current drain in the
OFF position is reduced to less than 1 Watt.

There is an additional mechanical mains switch
located on the back panel of the amplifier, and this
disconnects the device completely from the mains
supply. This switch must be in the ON position if
you wish to use the amplifier. It is not normally
necessary to switch the unit off using the rear mains
switch, and this is only recommended if you are certain
to be away from home for a protracted period (e. g. a
holiday).
