Installing Flash and CMEM

Installing Flash and CMEM

Introduction

Release 6.2 and greater allows the Vanguard 6435 and 6455 to increase the FLASH
memory and expand the CMEM area. Existing Vanguard 6435 and 6455’s can be
updated to 8 Mbyte SIMM as long as the bootprom is also updated. A new bootprom
is required to support the 12mb Flash option with the 128 kbyte CMEM. To use 128k
CMEM, 8 Mbyte SIMM must be installed and the bootprom updated.

Rules and
Upgrade/
Downgrade
procedures and
considerations

These rules are based on expected operation. The upgrade and downgrade
procedures and considerations are based on actual results from testing.

Rules
4MEG FLASH SIMM Present (or no flash present)

1.) Any combination of Bootproms and code images are acceptable.

Note:

6.1 Code ------- 5.1 Bootprom (or 5.2 Bootprom)

6.2 Code ------- 5.2 Bootprom (or 5.1 Bootprom)

8MEG Flash SIMM Present

2.) Any combination of Bootproms and Code must be <= 6.1 or;

Note

The 8MEG SIMM is not officially supported prior to release 6.2, however it can
be installed in a 6455 running a 6.1 release without harm. It will simply be
recognized and treated as a "4MEG SIMM".

3.) Any combination of Bootproms and Code Must be > =6.2

4.) Once you are upgraded to 6.2 with presence of 8MEG Flash SIMM you
cannot go back cleanly. See Downgrade instructions.

Upgrade to 8MEG
Flash SIMM

Method 1
This method is not preferred, but it may occur in the field, where customers may
already be upgraded to 6.2, and probably have a 4MEG flash installed. They could
determine later that they will need the 8MEG flash to support their operations.

Step

Description

1

Save CMEM (It is always recommended that you save CMEM).

2

The system is or has already been upgraded to 6.2 and has a 4MEG
flash SIMM installed.

At this point it does not matter if the bootprom has been upgraded or
not. (rule 1). If Vanguide was used it will upgrade the bootprom, but
other methods will not (TFTP, CLDR via Procomm, crossload).

First insure that the bootprom is 5.2. If it is not, use Vanguide to load
or reload a 6.2 image. Vanguide will detect and upgrade the
bootprom. The node must be accessible via the CTP for vanguide to
detect and upgrade the bootprom.
