1 Introduction

1.1 Introduction to the operating system of the PCMatic
devices

The PCMatic devices “Automation Panel” and “Automation Controller” use the Windows CE 4.2
operating system. As compared with the operating system of a standard PC, this means that:

Many elements appear the same, but contain differences which are invisible to the

user.

These differences result from the extensively slimmed-down hardware. In particular, it is
necessary to adopt different approaches and to pay attention to special characteristics during the
processes of installation and data transfer, as a result of the absence of drive units (diskette, CD)
and because of the hard disk and main memories used by the operating system.

After the PCMatic device has been started up, the operating system’s user interface appears in the
usual Windows

® style in the form of a desktop.

The following elements are of particular importance at this point:

Task bar

The task bar at the lower edge of the screen contains the start button
(left) and the information area (right). Between these areas, the programs
which the user has currently started in the system are shown as task bar
buttons.

Start button

By clicking on “Start”, a menu is called up, providing easy and rapid
access to the most commonly used applications on the computer. In
addition to the programs contained within Windows CE itself, those
which are specific to automation applications are also listed here.

Information area

This is the area on the right of the task bar next to the task bar buttons.
The current time is shown in the information area. In addition, it is
possible for links to be displayed here, permitting rapid access to specific
programs, e.g. the information Dialogue of the network configuration or,
if applicable, the user interface of the installed PLC.

Links on the

desktop

By means of links which can be created on the desktop, an additional
facility is provided for easy opening of programs or documents.

In addition to the visible elements, the operating system also contains a simplified task manager
(“Strg+Alt+Entf”), which permits the closing down of applications.
