7 Remote Access Service

The Windows CE RAS facilitates the direct access of the devices to a network via a modem
connection. If no LAN connection is available, it is nevertheless possible by this method to carry
out remote maintenance operations on the device.

Suitable tools for this purpose are, for example, FTP, Web Server or specialised remote
maintenance tools.

RAS provides two-way connection as follows:

• Incoming RAS, whereby the CE device is dialled up by a remote client.
• Dial-up networking, whereby the CE device itself dials into a remote network.

7.1 Incoming RAS

The RAS server installed on the CE devices accepts incoming calls by means of a modem, ensures
they are authenticated and connects them to the network.

Only a modem-based connection is supported for this purpose. In the standard configuration, the
RAS server allocates to the clients an automatically generated IP address.

The following sections demonstrate the establishment of a connection to the RAS server.

In order to set up an RAS connection to the CE device, a Hayes-compatible modem is connected
to one of the serial interfaces, COM1 or COM2. The RAS server is then activated for this modem
by using the “Config Manager” on the register page “Server”.

7.1.1 RAS server configuration

The connection on the filing card
“Server” is configured by using the
“Config Manager” of the CE device.

The “Start” button configures and
activates the modem selected under
“Modem Line”.

After pressing the “Start” button, the
configuration page for the modem
connection is displayed. This can be
used to make settings for the transfer
protocol. With the exception of the
baud rate, the standard settings are
adequate for a simple connection and
do not need to be changed.
